Fuel Prices in Czech Republic: What Affects the Price at the Pump
Fuel prices are influenced by many factors – from global oil prices and tax policy to seasonal demand fluctuations. This article explains how prices are formed.

1. Global Oil Prices
Brent crude oil price is the main factor. Changes take several weeks to reach pump prices. The CZK/USD exchange rate also plays a role, currently around 22–24 CZK/USD.
2. Taxes – More Than Half the Price
Excise duty on gasoline is 12.84 CZK/liter, diesel 9.95 CZK/liter, plus 21% VAT. Total taxes make up 45–55% of the final price.
3. Refinery and Station Margins
Refinery margin is 2–5 CZK/liter. Gas station margin is surprisingly low at 0.50–1.50 CZK/liter – they earn mainly from convenience store sales.
4. Regional Price Differences
Cheapest fuel in Ústí and Moravian-Silesian regions. Most expensive in Prague and tourist areas. Difference of 1–3 CZK/liter.
5. Seasonal Patterns
Prices rise in spring/summer (travel demand) and fall in autumn/winter. Long-term trend shows gradual price increases.
6. European Comparison
Czech Republic has mid-range EU fuel prices. Cheaper in Poland and Hungary, more expensive in Germany and Netherlands.
